The Hyundai Azera is a full-size front-drive sedan that prioritizes comfort, luxury, safety, and value over sportiness. Offering a long list of standard features, this large sedan continues to pressure rivals such as the Toyota Avalon and Chevrolet Impala, when Hyundai buyers want something different than a midsizer such as the Sonata.

The predecessor to the Azera, the Hyundai XG, debuted in the U.S. market in 1999 as the XG300 equipped with a 2.5-liter V-6 paired to a five-speed automatic powering the front-wheels. In 2001, a 3.0-liter V-6 was introduced, and in 2002 the U.S. received the XG350 equipped with a new 3.5-liter V-6. In 2005, the XG was discontinued to make way for the new Azera. Hyundai Azera Images First Drive

Hyundai introduced the first-generation Azera in the U.S. for the 2006 model year featuring a new 3.8-liter V-6, lots of standard features, and a spacious interior. In 2006 Motor Trend Car of the Year testing we said, “The Azera earned points on value, superiority, and significance, thereby wounding the Lucerne and Avalon and earning itself what would’ve been a podium finish, if we reported runners-up.” Hyundai refreshed the Azera in 2011 with new front and rear fascia, alloy wheels, fog lamps, and an increase in power from a 3.8-liter V-6.

The Latest Generation

Hyundai debuted the second-generation Azera for the 2012 model year featuring Hyundai’s fluidic sculpture design, an improved interior, additional standard features, and a new 3.3-liter V-6 paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. In our First Test review we said, “All in all, the Azera is a skillfully executed offering that should put the competition on high alert.” In 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year testing, we commended the Azera on its improved styling, comfort, roomy and luxurious interior. However, the steering feel and handling were not on par with its segment rivals.

In 2015, the Azera received a few updates including a restyled front fascia and grille along with a slightly different bumper. In addition, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and lane change assist were added to the list of standard features.

Why You’d Consider One

The Hyundai Azera should please large sedan shoppers who want lots of standard features, a large and quiet interior, smooth ride, and a long warranty.

Why You’d Look Elsewhere

When sporty handling or available all-wheel drive are priorities, the Azera might not be the best fit.
